Introduction:

Maverick director Mani Ratnam is back with his next outing titled Cheliya. Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari played the lead roles in the movie which is said to be a romantic action drama. AR Rahman composed the music and Ravi Varman is the cinematographer. Produced by Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, Cheliya released all over today. Here is the review of the film.

Story:

Cheliya is the story of Varun (Karthi) who works as a fighter pilot for Indian Army. He falls in love with Leela Abraham (Aditi Rao Hydari), a doctor by profession during an accident. With many ups and downs, it was during Kargil war in 1999, Varun gets captured by the Pak army after which he will be jailed. The rest of Cheliya is all about how he manages to escape and meet Leela. Watch Cheliya to know about the journey of love.

Analysis:

Cheliya starts off with Kargil war that takes place across the India – Pak border. The first half of the film has been slow paced but it has some decent moments. The songs have been misplaced though they have been shot well. It is the cinematography that carries the film forward and the film slows down as it passes on. The screenplay of the film is the reason for the audience to be left confused. On the whole the first half of Cheliya tests the patience of the audience.

The second half of Cheliya is a complete misfire and the movie offers nothing for the audience. The love track looks meaningless and it lacks the much needed emotions throughout. The action episodes look faked and the songs are sure not worth. The second half of Cheliya fails in all the available ways. The climax of the film has been decent but it makes no difference after a massive mistake.

Performance:

Karthi looks decent but he doesn’t really look apt for the role. He has been energetic and impressive in the assigned role. Aditi Rao Hydari is the only good that happened for Cheliya and she carried the film with a feel. Her expressions have been top notch and she looked stunning on screen. She has been glamorous in the assigned role and shined with perfection. All the other actors have been impressive.

The story of Cheliya has been old fashioned and it has been taken from the old films of Mani Ratnam. The screenplay of the movie is the major reason for the film turning out a disappointment. The dialogues looked decent and the music has been just ok. The cinematography is the major highlight of the movie and some beautiful locales of Kashmir have been well presented on screen. The production values of Cheliya looked lavish and Mani Ratnam fails in all the available ways with Cheliya in presenting it as a romantic love saga.

Final Word:

Cheliya is a huge disappointment from the legendary director Mani Ratnam and the movie lacks interesting plot and engaging narration. A film that can be given a skip this weekend.

Cheliya Movie Review Rating : 1/5
